Whitaker and the 11-year-old KWPN-gelding, Dekato (Upgrade) made a close call victory on compatriot, Guy Williams aboard the 14-year-old SF-stallion, Rouge de Ravel (Ultimo van ter Moude).
France's Olivier Robert completed the stage with his 15-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, Eros (Querlybet Hero).
The pair was followed by Mikael Forsten with Nabab's Atlanto (Nabab de Reve) in fourth and Dutch champion Leopold van Asten in fifth with the 8-year-old VDL Groep Chaccola (Chacco-Blue).
