CSI Paris: Wathelet wins thrilling Longines Masters Grand Prix
In Paris, a spectacular Grand Prix has just been ridden. 45 combinations entered the show ring for a difficult course. The course was very technical, so a lot of riders made mistakes on several fences. Several top riders such as Pius Schwizer, Penelope Leprevost and Lucy Davis decided to retire. Kent Ferrington broke his stirrup leather on the first fence but decided to give it a brave try with Creedance (f. Lord Z). Just before the tripple combination he decided however to keep to honors to himself.

The Austrian rider Max Kühner was the first one to jump a clear first round. He saddled Cornet Kalua (f. Cornet Obolensky) for this job. Eventually eight combinations managed to do the samen, under them three Belgians.

Niels Bruynseels was the first Belgian rider to enter the show ring for the jump-off. He rode a very fast round, but his horse, Cas de Liberte (f. Cracky Z) hit one fence, resulting in a sixth place. Nicola Philippaerts, another young Belgian rider, was decide to ride for the victory as well. With H&M Harley v. Bisschop (f. Dulf van den Bisschop), he jumped a very fast jump-off, but two jumping penalties resulted in an eight place.

After them, it was up to Gregory Wathelet to enter the show ring. With the 12-year old Eldorado van het Vijverhof (f. Thunder van de Zuuthoeve), he went fast as lightening. He took a lot of risk at managed to adjust the time of John Whitaker, who was on the lead at that moment, with five seconds. No other combination could do better than Wathelet's 41,86 seconds so the Belgian rider took the victory in a spectacular way. Betram Allen tried to beat the time of Wathelet by riding a very fast round with Hector van d'Abdijhoeve (f. Cabrio vd Heffinck) and for a moment it seemed like he was going to get it. But eventually he finished in 42,08 seconds and had to take peace with the second place. STX-rider Daniels Deusseur took account of the third place with Equita van't Zorgvliet (f. Cassini I). This combination jumped a clear jump-off in 43,81 seconds.

John Whitaker, who was the first to jump a clear jump-off with Ornellaia (f. For Pleasure) ended on fourth place. Max Kühner and Cornet Kalua (f. Cornet Obolenksy) ended on fifth place.
