Hough states after her win; “I had the advantage of going last and seeing what Kent’s time was and Laura’s time was, and I decided to play it on the safe side and put in extra strides,” Hough said. “But my horse is naturally fast and she can cut turns short. She’s been in great form all week. I did take a bit of a risk with the turns because Laura’s not a slow rider. I had to ride a smart round.”
The Verizon Center (USA), in downtown Washington, D.C., was the venue for the third leg of the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping 2016/2017 North American League, Eastern sub league.
From 28 starters, 7 were clear in the first round.
Course designer was Alan Wade (IRL).
The winner was six-time FEI World Cup™ Finalist and 2000 Olympian Lauren Hough riding the 12-year-old mare Ohlala.
All top four riders in the class were U.S. Olympians and currently ranked within the top 50 of the Longines World Rankings.
The FEI World Cup™ Jumping 2016/2017 North American League includes 14 qualifying rounds and the next leg for the Eastern Sub-Leagues takes place on Saturday, 5 November.
Calgary
“It was a galloping course, but it had some good turns,” McAllister said of the final round. “I had originally planned to do the inside slice—he’s quite good at that. But knowing that only one other rider had gone clean before me, and because he jumped so high in the first part of the course, I decided to get galloping and go around rather than take the slice [from my original plan].
“I think he’s probably the easiest horse I’ve ever ridden. He can package his stride to 10 feet and open it to 16, or 18, feet. He can do it all within ten strides. He’s really special. And he’s also very careful. It’s a really great combination for a big horse. I tell the kids, if there were a 1.60-meter equitation division, I’d easily win it on him.”
