They were with 32 combinations that appeared at the start to take the trail over a height of 1.55m. The derby was difficult, high and it was a long trail. That in combination with a shining sun certainly did not make the assignment easier. Our country had no one to start.
The Netherlands brought 2 very strong combinations into position. Johnny Pals who recently won Lummen's h Derby did not finish with Urjul Van Generhese (v. Indian Gold from Casterhoeve). The only 18-year-old Sanne Thijssen, who won the Derby in Eindhoven last year made a strong impression during the qualifications with Bulvasco (v: Verdi). However in todays derby the bar was razed to high and the decided to stop fighting in the middle of the race. A firm applause became her comfort prize!
There were only three combinations that fought there way to the finish without making any jumping mistakes in this heavy derby. That meant there was a jump-off this year in worlds toughest derby!
The Slovaks rider Pato Muente was the first to start. With his 10-year-old Zera 23 (by Cero) set the bar with a clear round in 56.30 seconds. Putting the presure on the two home riders from Germany. Nisse Lüneburg and the 9-year-old Cordillo (Corrido)then put in a round of 55.16 seconds. Technicly being faster but having one pole down.
Gilbert Tillmann was a last chance for Germany to claim a home win. Entering the impressive arena with the eight-year-old mold Claus Dieter (by Clarimo) he pushed the pedal. And the tactic seemed to be succesfull untill he hit a bump in the double. There his horse made a mistake, but he did claim second place with hit top ride in 50.12 seconds.
