Olympic update: what does the changing format mean for the show jumpers?

The third and final equestrian discipline at these Olympic Games starts on Saturday, 1 August with the veterinary inspection of the showjumping horses. From Tuesday no less than 75 show jumping riders from 35 different countries will compete. Twenty countries, including the Netherlands, will bring a team of three riders to the start.

Individual competition

The individual title competition will start on Tuesday with the jump-off (Table A, not on time, but of course with a maximum time allowed) without a jump-off. This course counts as qualification for the individual final on Wednesday. The 30 highest placed combinations will start in the final, where all riders start with a clean sheet. If more riders with the same number of penalty points finish in place 30, the time is decisive. The final course (also according to a Table A) will be followed by a jump-off to determine the individual medal winners in case of an equal number of penalty points after the first round.

Nations Cup

There have been major changes in the format of the competitions. A team consists of only three combinations and there is no longer a tie. On Friday, after the rest day and the second veterinary check, the qualification of the Nations Cup starts. In the qualifier (Table A, not on time, without jump-off) 20 teams of countries start with three riders each. All teams start with 0 penalty points on the counter. In the final on Saturday, all qualified teams start with a clean slate. The final is over one course (Table A, not on time). A possible jump-off will follow to determine the winners of the team medals in the event of an equal number of penalty points.
