Olympics: Smolders, van der Vleuten and Greve to Paris for TeamNL, Emmen as back-up

The Dutch federation today announced the Olympic teams for Paris 2024. In the Royal Stables at Paleis Het Loo, the Dutch riders will be introduced together with their national coach. For TeamNL, show jumpers Willem Greve, Harrie Smolders and Maikel van der Vleuten will go to the City of Light. Kim Emmen joins the male trio led by Jos Lansink as reserve rider.

JUMPING

  • Willem Greve & Grandorado TN N.O.P. (Reserve: Highway TN N.O.P.)
  • Harrie Smolders & Uricas van de Kattevennen (Reserve: Monaco N.O.P.)
  • Maikel van der Vleuten & Beauville Z N.O.P. (Reserve: O'Bailey van het Brouwershof N.O.P.)

Reserve:

  • Kim Emmen & Imagine

"As a fourth combination, you need a horse that doesn't look left or right and a rider who doesn't either and, in addition, can perform under pressure. This is precisely why Kim was chosen. Kim rode a strong first round in the Nations Cup in Rotterdam and continued that form into the Grand Prix, where she was really under pressure to show herself. She did that super," Lansink justified his choice for the 29-year-old rider.

"Luck and the form of the day will be decisive."

Their Olympic competition is scheduled from August 1 to 6. National coach Jos Lansink is looking forward to the battle in Paris. "The first three riders were of course already fixed in my mind for some time. They also have the advantage of having a very good second horse at their disposal. In Paris, the form of the day will be decisive. With only three riders in a team it shouldn't be against us. In Rotterdam you saw how close everything was, the horses were in really good shape, but in a Nations Cup you need clear rounds otherwise you don't compete. I am really very happy with these four combinations, they are real championship riders with very good horses."

"We are definitely going for a medal with this competitive team, but in my opinion we are not among the favorites," Harrie Smolders spoke.

DRESSAGE

The dressage riders will compete for medals from July 30 to August 4. Dressage team coach Patrick van der Meer says of the composition of his team, "I am super proud of the performances the riders and horses delivered during the observation competitions. It was all very close together and it is a luxury position that we have such a good group."

  • Dinja van Liere & Hermes N.O.P. (Reserve horse: Hartsuijker)
  • Hans Peter Minderhoud & GLOCK's Toto Jr
  • Emmelie Scholtens & Indian Rock
  • Erdward Gal & GLOCK's Total US
  • Not traveling: Marlies van Baalen & Habibi DVB N.O.P.

Reseve:

"We clearly stated in advance that the NK and CHIO Rotterdam were the observation competitions for this year. If you add up the results you arrive at this order, but also if you look at the form and follow your feeling. At CHIO Rotterdam we got a lot of compliments on the Dutch performance. I am going to do everything I can to maintain the good form of the team so that everyone can see in Paris what the Dutch dressage team is capable of," said national coach Patrick van der Meer.

EVENTING

The eventing riders kick off the equestrian competition in Paris. They will be in action from July 27 to 29. National coach Andrew Heffernan says, "I'm looking forward to going to Paris with these four riders."

  • Janneke Boonzaaijer & ACSI Champ de Tailleur (Reserve horse: I'm Special N.O.P.
  • Sanne de Jong & Enjoy (Reserve horse: Global Faerlie Flashy)
  • Raf Kooremans & Crossborder Radar Love

Reserve:

  • Elaine Pen & Divali
  • Not traveling along: Tim Lips & Eckinops D'am

"My goal -and mission- is to achieve a top 6-8 ranking with the team and I am confident that these riders can do that. The competitions we have participated in in preparation have ensured that we travel to Paris very well prepared. Horses and riders have shown they can do it," spoke national coach Andrew Heffernan.
