The renowned stallion Colestus is now available for breeding at Team Nijhof. Approved by numerous studbooks, this striking gray stallion achieved great success at the highest levels of show jumping with Ludger Beerbaum and his stable rider Christian Kukuk. The impressive son of the influential sire Cornet Obolensky, bred from a state premium mare by Stakkato x Pilot, is now standing at stud in Geesteren while also remaining available through Ludger Beerbaum's stud station.
“I hope Colestus will now get more opportunities in breeding,” Ludger Beerbaum says of his beloved stallion. “He produces show jumpers like himself: light-footed, with quick reflexes, extremely careful. For me, Greya, ridden by Kent Farrington, is the quintessential example of the type of horse Colestus produces. Extreme quality, naturally gifted, full of blood, not too big, yet powerful and capable. Truly a horse that belongs in the world's top 10 in the coming years. It would be wonderful to see more Colestus offspring of this caliber.”
A True Refiner
Beerbaum continues, “He is a true refiner who passes on his qualities particularly well to larger mares. I wouldn’t choose him for a small, delicate mare, but he produces outstanding horses with mares of sufficient size.”
Champion of Holstein
This was recently confirmed when a well-developed, powerful son of Colestus, bred by Sören von Rönne, was crowned champion at the Holstein stallion licensing.
‘One of the Best Horses We’ve Ever Had’
After a career under Beerbaum’s guidance, Colestus transitioned to Christian Kukuk, then a lesser-known stable rider, who rode him in Grand Prix events. It has been four years since Colestus last competed. “In terms of innate quality, Colestus was one of the best horses we’ve ever had in our stable,” Kukuk remarks. “He always had a fantastic jumping technique, there was no horse more careful than him, and his intelligence was phenomenal. These are the traits he passes on. I’ve ridden two of his offspring, and they were exactly like their father.”
An Exceptional Personality
Christian Kukuk has also used Colestus as a sire in his breeding program. “Just look at his pedigree: Cornet x Stakkato x Pilot. That kind of quality doesn’t come from nowhere! These are precisely the qualities we need in our horses: intelligent, sensitive, careful jumpers. Colestus was an exceptional personality in the sport, and he remains so in breeding.”
