On Friday evening, the CSI5* 1m50 Van Mossel Prize was the biggest challenge in Maastricht. No piece of cake for the more than thirty combinations at the start, with barely six of them placed for the jump-off. However, it turned out to be child's play for Bas Moerings and the homebred Kivinia!
Louis Koninckx built the challenging 1m50 high course. The first four combinations for the jump-off appeared on the scene early on with immediate clear rounds from openers Katrin Eckermann and Chao Lee. This was followed by Pieter Devos, Bas Moerings and Nina Mallevaey with a ticket for the jump-off, with less than ten combinations having passed the revue. Then it was waiting until after the break, with Annelies Vorsselmans as the fifth clear. The last to join the small group was Victor Bettendorf.
Eckermann immediately pressed the gas pedal fully aboard the Comme il Faut mare from the breeding of her father, Otmar Eckermann. After a solid ride with the better steering and cornering, the time to beat stood at a sharp 38.02s. Second in the arena was Devos with the 8-year-old Spring. He was charged with bars in the sand with the daughter of Grandorado TN (F. Buunk-Hofs) and eventually landed sixth place.
Moerings appeared third in the ring with Kivinia. In front of his own audience, he deftly steered the 9-year-old I'm Special de Muze daughter through the course, chasing Eckermann's time. Until the last, the MECC was on the edge of its seat, until redemption came: 36.10s on the clock!
Nina Mallevaey managed to stay off the wood with Dynastie de Beaufour and scored silver with the Diamant de Semilly mare. For Annelies Vorsselmans and the 9-year-old C. Kulottie W (Comme il Faut), not yet routinee at this height, the bars stayed in the spoons and it was a good rehearsal for later! Fourth place was recorded for them.
"I am very satisfied! I haven't ridden jump-off so many times at this level with her. I knew I wouldn't be as fast as the others but I wanted to do the same cornering as them so we could get some experience together. That all worked out so I was extremely happy!"
Only Victor Bettendorf could still throw a spanner in the works of the Dutch party. On the 8-year-old Kenya Heureka Z, a Zangersheide mare by Kassander van't Roosakker, it was over for him at the second hurdle. They finished fifth.
