In Hickstead, one of Great Britain's magical venues, the international action kicked off on Thursday with the Youngster Tour and two CSIO5* classes. The 1m50 high course was the main challenge of the day but proved no biggie for Germany's Jörne Sprehe.

Aboard the ten years old stallion Toys (Toulon), Sprehe finished her second phase with a time of 36,44s. Local rider Sameh El Dahan (GBR) steered WKD Toronto (Tornesch 1042) in 36,88s to a clear round and thus second place. Only one hundredth of a second difference kept Tom Wachman (IRL) on three with the nine years old Obora's Laura (Luidam).

Adrian Speight (GBR) stopped the clock on 37,49s, finishing fourth on Millfield Baloney (Balou du Rouet). Italy's Giacomo Casadei left the Brits biting the dust and out of the top five with a time of 37,87s, concluding as fifth with Corradiena van't Klein Asdonk (Cornet Obolensky).

Joseph Stockdale takes winning start with Equine Rescue Services Kandleford

Earlier on, Joseph Stockdale led a full British top four of the CSIO5* 1m45 The Royal International Vase class, in the saddle of the Kannan offspring, Equine Rescue Services Kandleford. Matthew Sampson came second with the nine years old King Lepantino, William Whitaker was third on the equally nine years old Active Spirit (Vigo d'Arsouilles).

For Sampson, it was already his second top three placement of the day as the Brit already placed himself on two with the eight years old Pretty Pi'Que de'Luxe (Party Dance) in the first qualifier of the Youngster Tour. Winner was James Smith aboard Marseille. Nicole Lockhead Anderson was third on Mecoblue PS (Messenger).
