Yesterday, Boyd Martin shared the heartbreaking news that Barney Rubble, the 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by the Barney Rubble Syndicate, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 7. The horse, who had moved up to CCI4* level just last year, is undergoing a post-mortem examination at New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania. An aneurysm is suspected as the cause.
Martin explained that the incident occurred during a light cross-country schooling session at his Pennsylvania farm. “Barney was jumping brilliantly, and during a break he suddenly lost his balance and collapsed. Within seconds, he was gone. Standing there, unable to help, was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life.”
Reflecting on the horse’s qualities, Martin said: “Barney was truly one of my all-time favorites. He was full of energy, galloped like the wind, and had endless scope over fences. His lively character could make him a challenge, but I loved every minute of producing him. I was certain he was destined for the 5* level. To lose him in such an unforeseeable way is absolutely devastating.”
He also expressed gratitude to the Barney Rubble Syndicate. “They believed in him as much as I did and gave him the chance to grow at his own pace. Passing by his empty stall now, I can’t help but wish this were just a nightmare. Rest in peace, Barney.”
Barney began his international career with Australian rider Chris Burton before coming to the United States to continue under Martin’s guidance. He moved successfully up to the 4* level at Bromont in 2024 and earlier this spring placed in the top 10 in his first CCI4*-L at Tryon. His next planned competition was the US Equestrian Open of Eventing Final at Morven Park in October.
Our thoughts are with Martin and his team during this difficult time.
