It’s Raining Ribbons for Susan Hutchison and SIG Excel at Colorado Horse Park

Junior, amateur and professional jumper competitors at Summer in the Rockies Week V enjoyed competition in one of Colorado Horse Park’s treasures; the Derby Field. It is a sprawling arena with ramps and hills and banks. It offers course designers the opportunity to work with elements that are out of the ordinary and use them to challenge riders, separating the good from the best. Three Speed derby classes were held, offering the riders a chance to experience the Derby Field at speed. In the $5,000 Open Jumper Derby Susan Hutchison from Temulca, CA and SIG Excel, owned by SIG International, Inc. were unbeatable. The combination of this mare and this rider are a force of nature. They won the $15,000 Open Welcome Stake during Week IV and were in the money in the Welcome on Thursday. When asked how she prepares her horses Hutchison said, “I feel that the preparation should be done at home not at the show. I just believe in jumping a few warm up jumps and riding the course to the best of my ability. Walk it in as close to like the course designer expects you to do it. Another powerhouse to be reckoned with at Summer in the Rockies V is the junior rider, Hunter Holloway from Topeka, KS and Hays Investment Corp’s I Love Lucy. In the $5,000 High Junior / Amateur Speed Derby, a Table III class with faults converted, Holloway had a rail but that didn’t prevent her from taking her victory lap. No horse and rider team in the class came within three seconds of her time, even with the added four seconds. “I was kicking, I was going!” said Holloway. “She is amazing she is such a good horse. She’s a competitive horse. It’s so fun to ride a horse that wants to win as badly as you do. We go out there and go for it every time.” Holloway expressed that the derby fields are not used as often and have fallen from favor and popularity. She wants to see them used more often. “I love this field,” she said. “I love the banks and I wish we did the water and the hills more often. It is sad to see it go away and I’d like to see it come back.” Just last night the junior phenom and her big gray Yolo, owned by Hays Investment Corporation, had a clear round in what was touted as a vey large track, designed by FEI course Designer, Marina Azevedo for the Open Welcome Stake. The pair had one time fault. “My horse was amazing and he came back and was listening so well through all the lines it just kind of caught me off guard,” Holloway said. “I just took too much time in the corners and he jumped amazing and I was really happy with him.” No doubt Holloway and Yolo had a good warm up for Summer in the Rockies Week V $50,000 Kathy and Brad Coors Family Grand Prix which takes place at 4 p.m. on Saturday. In the $5,000 Low Junior / Amateur Speed Derby, Rebecca Young of Kirkland, IL and her own Holly Go Lightly, a chestnut Thoroughbred mare, were fast and clear to earn first place honors ahead of a field of 21 horse and rider teams. The $5,000 Open Match Race was cancelled due to an afternoon thunderstorm that brought much welcomed rain to the area. 557. $5,000 Open Speed Derby 1 /300/SIG Excel SIG International, Inc./Susan Hutchison/1500.00 2 /753/CastalanoSandwillow Farm/Katharin Gualtieri/1000.00 3 /974/Leon D'OrJames Mc Connell/Amanda Mc Connell/750.00 4 /593/CondoleezaAMA Marketing & Mgmt, Inc/Genevieve Engelhorn/500.00 5 /595/LycosAMA Marketing & Mgmt, Inc/Justin Resnik/350.00 6 /337/DillingerCoralie Leslie/Helen Leslie/325.00 7 /253/October Hill's CuatroOctober Hill Sales Limited/Christian Heineking/300.00 905. $5,000 High Jr/A-O Speed Derby 1 /822/I Love Lucy Hays Investment Corp./Hunter Holloway/1500.00 2 /599/Take A Chance Lucy Bradbury/Lucy Bradbury/1000.00 3 /249/ChakiraIsabelle Terry/Isabelle Terry/750.00 4 /736/Commissario 6Hannah Donald/Hannah Donald/500.00 5 /432/Witchita Kimberly Little/Kimberly Little/350.00 6 /369/Camilla RC Guy Mc Elvain/Chenoa Mc Elvain/325.00 7 /556/Wender R Amanda Hauser/Amanda Hauser/300.00 8 /251/Quantonius Nicole Peterson/Nicole Peterson/275.00 904. $5,000 Low Jr/A-O Speed Derby 1 /927/Holly Go Lightly Rebecca Young/Rebecca Young/1500.00 2 /849/Aireach Tessa Dejong/Tessa Dejong/1000.00 3 /371/Cesars Crack Guy Mc Elvain/Chenoa Mc Elvain/750.00 4 /731/Pinto Bean Patricia Roberts/Emma Roberts/500.00 5 /219/Correggia Palmer Divide Ranch/Georgia Griffis/350.00 6 /585/Lancaster Sabine Cooper/Sabine Cooper/325.00 7 /275/Adlaya Rashae Kacavenda/Rashae Kacavenda/300.00 8 /662/Athena Hannah Newton/Hannah Newton/275.00
