Pieter Clemens has won during the CSI5* competition in New York in a sensational way. When the young Belgian rider, who is riding for Lansink stables, stared his jump-off, the British Amanda Derbyshire stood in the leed. A very short turn to the last fence however crushed Derbyshires dream of winning the class. Clemens made some time for us right after taking home the victory. Your turn to the last fence got you the victory. Did you plan this turn form the beginning? "No, acutally not. John Madden came to me right before I had to enter that I had to check out if the turn was possible for me. He thought I could safe a few seconds making this turn. My nephew Olivier (Philippaerts) thought it was worth taking the risk, so I did that. In order to make this turn I did have to add a stride to the second last fence, so it was a risk. But in the end everything turned out quite well for me". Can you tell us something more about your horse? Did you know you had a chance to win the class? "Caldero is a naturally fast horse so I knew I could ride fast. I think I rode better today than in yesterdays speed class. I started way to fast and because of that, it was just not good enough. Today I started more quiet and I speeded up to at the end, which was a better tactic". Why did you decide to ride in New York? "I also competed at the Longines Masters in Hong Kong and I had a great time there. I asked the organization if I would be possible for me to ride in New York as well and that's how everything started. I'm very happy that I got the opportunity to ride this amazing show". What do you think about the show here in New York? "Everything is just great here. The show is very well organized and the atmosphere is great. I'm convinced that the show will grow into being one of the greatest shows in the world in a few years".
