The Colorado Horse Park drew a competitive field of horses and riders for the professional hunter divisions during WCHR Week at Summer in the Rockies V. Kelley Farmer, Kirklen Peterson, Freddy Vasquez, Kelley Buringa, and Matt Cyphert all had their share of success, finishing off the day with a championship tricolor apiece. It was a team effort in the 3’6” Performance Working Hunters, where Kelley Farmer and Kirklen Peterson both impressed the judges with Taken. Farmer piloted Taken, a Jessica Stitt entry of Elburne, IL, to top finishes yesterday. Today, she passed the reins off to her student Peterson, who finished out the division with a first over fences, cinching the division championship. Following in reserve was Sir Rio, an entry owned by Chelsea Magness of Englewood, CO. Also taking reserve was Tamara Provost and Gretzky, an Olivia Lawton entry. “Kelley actually rode him yesterday, we kind of both ride him a lot, commented Peterson. “I was going to stay here this weekend with some junior horses and he was going to be one of them, but the way the shipping worked out, we couldn’t figure out how to let just three stay for the weekend. So she let me show him today, which was a treat. That was my treat instead of the weekend.” Peterson continued “Today was really good, I made a little mistake in the first round, I got him a little too deep to one jump but he was perfect, he took the joke and went back and was perfect. He is really fun, he can jump anything from anywhere, you literally just loop the reins, pick up a gallop, and go. He is a blast, he is one of my favorite horses in the barn for sure. I usually get to show him at a few big shows in the fall. He will do Derby Finals, probably with Kelley, but I do get to do him in some big shows. “ By far the largest division of the day, the 3’3” Performance Working Hunters proved to be a competitive field of horses and riders. Finishing ahead of the rest was Matt Cyphert and Sagaro, Brittany and Mindy Hildebrand entry. Claiming reserve was Triumph and owner-rider Emma Farber of Encino, CA. In the First Year Green Huners, Freddy Vazquez and Alessio came out on top as division champion. Alessio is owned by Samantha Wolf of Glencoe, IL. Right behind them in reserve was Evan Coluccio and Fabled, a Glefke and Kensel LLC entry of Keswick, VA. “Alessio is a really nonchalant horse, so I try to get him a little bit attentive and sharp in the schooling ring,” remarked Vazquez. “He went much better today, much more level. He carried himself well and jumped a little bit cleaner. The second class he jumped nice, crisp, clean, clear. I was really happy with him. He has a tall kid, he is a tall horse, he can be booted on. She loves to kick so he suits her really well. For me it is just a little extra bonus to ride him in the First Years. His kid does the 3’3” Junior Hunters. Overall he is just an easy horse to live with, he is actually just six years old. He is like an old soul. He is just a good boy and a fun horse to have around.” Like many competitors, Vazquez decided to make the journey out west to the Colorado Horse Park because he knows what to expect when competing at one of Pat Boyle’s shows. Vazquez explained, “We came here for the first time last year. Pat Boyle who has Showplace Productions and puts on this horse show is a great friend of mine. His daughter Caitlin Boyle, who just won the Hunterdon Cup at Brandywine, rides with us. He put up a great show in Chicago so we decided to come here last year for the first time and we loved it so much we decided to come back with 32 horses.” No stranger to the winner’s circle, LPF Woodford took home his second consecutive High Performance Working Hunter Championship at Summer in the Rockies, this time with talented catch rider Kelley Buringa in the irons. Buringa rode LPF Woodford to two blues over fences today for Lone Palm Farm LLC out of Ocala, FL, in addition to a win and two seconds from yesterday. At the conclusion of the day, they were also announced as the $2,500 Open Hunter Classic winners. Susie Hogarty of Lone Palm Farm was thrilled with her horse’s outstanding performances these past two weeks. “It is awesome, absolutely awesome, I am so pleased,” expressed Hogarty. “Holly Shepard, we used to ride with her in Texas and we have been in Ocala and we have finally caught up with her at a horse show. She started riding this one and they were just perfect together, so we’ve been with Holly. We brought the horses early before Holly, so we contacted Matt Cyphert, and he told us that Kelley was a really good hunter rider so it worked really well.” Earlier this morning, Kelley Farmer and Scripted, a Glefke and Kensel LLC entry, claimed the Conformation Hunter tricolor. The pair rode to two red ribbon finishes today, in addition to their three wins from yesterday. Taking reserve honors was C. Quito and Jessie Lang for Margot Snowden of Wilson, WY. Tomorrow, the equitation riders will get their chance in the spotlight at the Summer in the Rockies Horse Show. The juniors will vie for qualifying points in the ASPCA Maclay, WIHS Hunter and Jumper Phases, and the THIS National Children’s Medal.
