Team USA clinch the Challenge Cup in Barcelona

Earlier this afternoon, Barcelona hosted the Challenge Cup, the consolation prize of the FEI Nations Cup Finals. Six teams competed today : France, USA, Venezuela, Qatar , Spain and Australia. Two changes were made on the American and Australian teams. Kent Farrington (USA) was replaced by Margie Engle and Edwina Tops Alexander (AUS) was replaced by James Paterson Robinson. Team USA emerged as victors today, a repeat of last year, after jumping off for top spot against Australia. ********************************** Under the scorching Spanish sun, Venezuelan rider Andres Rodriguez was first to go with Caballito, finishing with 5 faults. The time would prove to be an important factor in this round as many riders fell victim to the short time allowed. Venezuela started off well but eventually finished fifth overall. With only three riders, the Qatari team soon fell by the wayside, with none of their riders managing to jump clear over the tricky course. The home team , Spain, jumped very well to finish fourth behind America, Australia and France. The French team had a disappointing day, with none of their riders jumping clear. No-one quite expected this poor performance from the WEG team silver medalists. They finished on a total of 12 faults which was enough to see them on the podium in third place. Despite Lauren Hough and Ohlala having two rails down, team USA were able to finish on a total of 1 penalty after McLain Ward and Beezie Madden both went clear, with Margie Engle picking up 1 time fault. Jamie Kermond and Quite Cassini got the Australian campaign off to a good start by finishing with 1 time fault. Julia Hargreaves (Vedor) also picked up a time fault, however, James Paterson Robinson (Boris III) and Amy Graham (Bella Baloubet) both went clear, leaving Australia on a total of 1 fault. With both 1 penalty a piece, the USA and Australia went to a jump-off, with three riders from each team competing. The three American riders went clear and when James Paterson Robinson (USA) dropped two rails the victory went to America. Full results
