This weekend the most popular equestrian Olympic discipline kicks off at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. After the eventing and dressage it will be the show jumping athletes who come into action. Here are the basics you need to know to comprehend and follow the show jumping Games. Sunday 14th August is the official kick-off. The first individual qualifying competition is set at a height of 1.40-1.60m as a table A not against the clock, without jump-off. The class counts as a qualification for the individual final and will determine the starting order for the team competition. Teams will start in the first round of the team competition in the reverse order of penalties obtained in this first qualifier. Tuesday 16th August is set for round one of the team competition and equally the second individual qualifier. In the team competition all teams will start with zero points. The qualifier is open for all team athletes and horses from the first individual qualifier. Individuals will start first. Wednesday 17th August offers the second round of the team competition and third individual qualifier. Only the eight best countries placed on Tuesday will compete in this cmpetition as a team. Teams withdrawing from round two will not be replaced. Individually only the top 45 athletes from the first two qualifiers will take the start in this qualifier. The starting order is set according to the reverse order of the aggregate penalties incurred in the first and second qualifying comeptitions. Friday 19th August is the race for the Gold Medal. The individual final is a Table A not against the clock with jump-off. The first round is compulsory for the 35 best riders after the last three competition days. Only the 20 best from round A will advance to the ultimate final round. The scores of round A and B will be incurred to reveal the individual Olympic Gold Medalist.
