Defending champions Wilm Vermeir and IQ Van't Steentje ready for Mechelen: "I wouldn't want to ride this World Cup with any other horse."

December 30, 2022: What a magical moment. The Jumping Mechelen audience erupts as Wilm Vermeir and IQ van't Steentje race flawlessly through the jump-off of the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping. After more than 10 years, a Belgian rider has once again claimed victory in our country's most beloved show jumping competition.

The fans

Wilm will have to retell the story of his victory many times over. Especially on occasions like this, with Jumping Mechelen 2023 just a few days away. Wilm says, "Do I often get approached about Jumping Mechelen? Absolutely! So many people ask me if I'm in good form, wish me success, tell me they'll be there to support me... It's amazing. It gives me so much energy. I'm going to do everything I can to make my fans proud. Winning the FEI Jumping World Cup in Mechelen two times in a row would be quite special. Maybe even impossible... But I'm going to try."

The Best Horse in the Barn

Of course, Wilm brings out his top performer to assist him. "Absolutely, IQ will compete in the World Cup. I wouldn't want to ride that event with any other horse. He is our greatest pride. He deserves to be there." But perhaps the popularity the duo is currently enjoying brings an extra challenge. Wilm: "IQ is very sensitive to noise. And I suspect the audience might be quite loud. So, that could be tricky. We'll see..."

In addition to IQ Van't Steentje, Wilm is also bringing DM Jacqmotte and Magic van 't Hulgenrode to Vlaanderens Kerstjumping. Be sure to keep an eye on them in the other 5-star competitions. Because this crowd favorite is heading to the Nekkerhal with full ambition.
