Al Duhami was not the only Individual champion crowned on Sunday. Earlier in the day, Faleh Alajami (QAT) and Qapella had taken Individual A gold. Course Designer Louis Konickx (NED) struck a remarkably similar balance with two final tracks at different levels: each left three combinations on zero penalties after two rounds, setting up a jump-off in which the podium was already decided but the colour of the medals was not.

Five rounds, five clears

For Al Duhami and his 13-year-old mare, there was still one final clear to produce. They had arrived at the jump-off without a penalty throughout the Games.

First of the three to go, Al Duhami and Untouchable 32 (Van Helsing) kept that record intact, stopping the clock at 42.59 seconds with another zero on the board.

Teammate Abdulrahman Alrajhi and Lorenzo ES (Comme Il Faut) were almost three seconds faster in 39.73, but faults at the first element of the double combination and the final fence left them on eight penalties. That was still enough for silver after Basem Mohammed (QAT) and Chaccball (Chacco Blue) also finished on eight, in 43.26 seconds.

Eiken Sato (JPN) and Chadellano (Chacco Blue) finished just outside the medals on the single time penalty they had carried forward from Saturday, adding a clear round on Sunday to take fourth place.

“A gold medal is always a gold medal. Of course, we are very happy. I came here aiming for gold, and I was lucky to win,” Al Duhami said. “However, the Team gold carried more weight because I was the last rider and it was my responsibility to deliver. It was more difficult to win as a team.”

Experience pays off

At 54, Al Duhami was one of the most experienced Athletes in the field. The victory was his sixth Asian Games gold and his second Individual title, 16 years after he won Individual gold at Guangzhou 2010.

“My opponents are good riders, but the pressure when medals are at stake is always difficult. You have to be reasonable and feel how your horse is doing,” he said. “The horses had jumped two rounds in the team competition and another two rounds, so you have to be a little considerate, think about the horse and not take the maximum risk.”

The result gave Saudi Arabia a second Jumping gold of the Games following Thursday’s Team victory, with Al Duhami and Untouchable 32 finishing as the only combination to complete every round of both the Team and Individual competitions without a single penalty.

Alajami takes his chance

The medal race in Individual A shifted in the second round. Saad Alajmi (KSA) and Davenport, who had been second after Saturday’s opening round, remained clear until a refusal at the penultimate fence, after which Alajmi chose to retire.

That left Faleh Alajami (QAT) and Qapella, Almheiri and Hudson de Vains (Comme Il Faut), and Saturday’s leaders Almobty and Diana du Plevau Z (Dieu Merci van T&L) to contest the medals, all three combinations having completed the two rounds without penalty.

The jump-off saw each combination finish with a fence down. Alajami and Almheiri each faulted at fence 2, leaving the clock to separate them, with the Qatari combination’s 40.88 seconds securing gold ahead of Almheiri’s 41.93. Almobty remained clear until the final fence and finished in 45.35 for bronze.

“The jump-off was not easy, especially since I was the first to go. There was a lot of pressure,” Alajami said.

The victory marked his first Individual Asian Games medal, 20 years after his first appearance. His Asian Games career began in Endurance at Doha 2006, before he returned in Jumping. In Hangzhou three years ago, he finished ninth individually and helped Qatar to Team silver.

The gold also came with a relatively new partner – Alajami and Qapella only began competing together this season.

“I’m really proud of my mare. She did well over these three days,” he said.

The result gave Qatar one of the first Individual titles awarded under the new Asian Games Jumping format and completed a final day in which Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE shared the six individual medals.
