The Norman seaside town of Deauville provided the backdrop this weekend for the climax of its three-day international show jumping event CSIO3*, with the Région Normandie Grand Prix serving as the crown jewel of the programme. In the most demanding class on the schedule, a Table A competition over 1.55 metres with a jump-off, forty-nine combinations from across the globe competed for a ranking that also counts towards the Longines Ranking group C.
It was home rider Nina Mallevaey who ultimately claimed the top prize. After laying the groundwork with a smooth first round completed in 74.12 seconds - well within the 78-second time allowed - the French rider set the standard in the jump-off with an immaculate run aboard the ten-year-old gelding Destine to Be, an AES-bred horse out of the Diamant de Semilly line. Her jump-off time of 38.20 seconds proved untouchable, earning her not only the victory but also a cheque of fifteen thousand euros.
Second place went to a notable challenger: Omar Abdul Aziz Al Marzooqi of the United Arab Emirates also posted double clears with the twelve-year-old stallion Enjoy de la Mure (Vigo Cece), but had to settle for 39.02 seconds in the jump-off, less than a second slower than the winner.
Bronze went to another familiar name on the global circuit. Julien Epaillard, demonstrated once again that consistency is his trademark, this time aboard the nine-year-old gelding Hacker d'Auge (Action Breaker). Having already impressed in the first round with a tidy 74.90 seconds, Epaillard clocked 39.45 seconds in the jump-off. Enough for third place and nine thousand euros in prize money.
Just off the podium, Brazilian legend Rodrigo Pessoa finished fourth with the thirteen-year-old BWP gelding Major Tom (Vagabond de la Pomme). Pessoa delivered a flawless jump-off round in 40.24 seconds.
The top five was rounded out by Pénélope Leprevost, who steered the twelve-year-old SF stallion Ehning Flamingo, out of the Cardento line, through two clear rounds. The Frenchwoman stopped the clock at 40.68 seconds in the jump-off to earn a prize of 4,800 euros.
