Dreher secures German victory in CSI5*-W winning round Madrid

© Madrid Horse Week

In Madrid, there is World Cup-level jumping this weekend. The main event on Saturday evening was a 1.50m class from the CSI5* competition. It was a 'winning round' competition: the top twelve combinations from the first round returned for the decisive second round.

In the second round, Hans-Dieter Dreher set an impressive time early on: his Vestmalle de Cotis (by Baloubet du Rouet) finished in 43.95 seconds without a single jumping fault. There was only one combination that went faster: Eduardo Alvarez Aznar and Made in't Ruytershof (by Norton d'Eole). It seemed like the Spaniard was going to give the crowd a home victory, but the last obstacle got in the way: Aznar took all the risks, causing the last rail to fall. He would ultimately have to settle for seventh place. With this, Dreher was assured of the win.

The second place went to a Spanish rider: Terese Blazquez-Abascal rode her 11-year-old BWP mare Nasa de Toxandria (by Vertigo Saint-Benoit) flawlessly around the course and clocked in at 44.08 seconds. This kept her ahead of Maikel van der Vleuten, who secured third place with Elwikke (by Eldorado vd Zeshoek). The duo went clear in 45.75 seconds.

Leopold van Asten followed with VDL Groep Kiara (by Clearway) in fourth place after a faultless round in 46.61 seconds. Marcus Ehning and Flower Girl (by Hickstead) took fifth.
