Despite the best efforts of a world-class veterinary team and two surgical procedures, the difficult decision was made to let him go to prevent further suffering.

Ward took over the reins of "Paddy" from Great Britain’s Tim Gredley in early 2025. Though their partnership was relatively brief, it was incredibly impactful. The pair became a cornerstone of the American team almost immediately, securing major victories including at the CSIO5* Intesa Sanpaolo Nations Cup in Rome and CSIO5* Mercedes-Benz Nations Cup at CHIO Aachen.

"He Fought Tirelessly"

In a moving tribute on social media, McLain Ward praised the gelding’s fighting spirit and the dedication of his owner, Michael Smith. "Paddy fought tirelessly, just as he did throughout his career as a competitor, and our entire family and team are devastated by his loss," Ward shared. "During this challenging time, his owner, Mike Smith, exemplified true horsemanship—spending countless hands-on hours by Paddy’s side."

Ward also extended his gratitude to the veterinary staff at Rood & Riddle Wellington and Dr. Tim Ober for their extraordinary care during the horse's final days.

The entire team at Equnews sends our deepest condolences to McLain Ward, Michael Smith, and everyone who cared for Imperial HBF during this incredibly difficult time.
