The Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation (RFHE) has announced that Belgian top rider François Mathy Jr. will join the coaching staff of the Spanish showjumping team. He will take on the role of technical advisor, a position intended to give the federation extra strength in the run-up to the World Equestrian Games, the 2027 European Championships, and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The Spanish team has faced difficult times in recent years. At the European Championships in La Coruña (July 2023), Spain finished only sixteenth, underlining the need for reinforcement. With the arrival of Mathy Jr., the RFHE aims to rebuild its international competitiveness.
Mathy Jr. was part of the Belgian team for more than twenty years and is currently president of the International Jumping Riders Club (IJRC). His track record includes appearances at world championships and numerous Nations Cups. Alongside his sporting career, he has a solid academic background in economics and management (University of Liège), speaks seven languages – including Spanish – and maintains excellent relations with the FEI.
The RFHE praises his versatility: “Mathy Jr. has proven himself not only as a top-level rider, but also as a trainer and technical advisor in various international projects. His expertise and network make him a true reference in the world of showjumping.”
This appointment strengthens the team led by head coach Reyes Martín. The goal is clear: preparing for the 2026 World Equestrian Games, the 2027 European Championships, and ultimately the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
