After a jump-off featuring eleven combinations, Gilles Thomas has strengthened his lead in the Longines Global Champions Tour standings. Thomas had previously won the LGCT Grand Prix of Paris and had also reached the podium in Shanghai! “Right now, I really feel comfortable with a stable full of top horses. Not just Qalista, but also Ermitage and Luna…”
Gilles Thomas and Qalista DN (by Emerald van 't Ruytershof, breeder: Wim De Nul) were unstoppable. As one of the last to go in the jump-off, Thomas finished just a few tenths of a second faster than fellow Belgian Thibault Philippaerts.
“I’m definitely happy that I’ve significantly extended my lead in the standings. I feel comfortable saying that winning the overall ranking is now within reach. But of course, a lot can still change,” said Gilles.
“I’m sticking to the program now and we’ll see what comes,” the champion continued. “Qalista is truly a phenomenal mare. At first, I had doubts about her power, but time and again she manages to amaze me! She has mastered the ability. My only task with her is to make sure I stay calm. Sometimes she can overrun herself, and that’s something I need to control as a rider!”
Thibault Philippaerts was the first clear Belgian round in the initial phase. With the 10-year-old BWP gelding Pittman v/h Lilleveld (by Diamant De Semilly, breeder: Evelien Van Biesen), Philippaerts jumped clear into second place. The third spot also had a Belgian touch, as Nadja Peter Steiner completed the top three with the 12-year-old BWP mare Nice van 't Zorgvliet (by Emerald, breeder: Clarysse Van Coppenolle).
“For my first LGCT Grand Prix, I feel absolutely amazing. I now hold a golden ticket because Gilles had already won. I almost felt the victory, but I was also realistic and knew that Gilles still had to go,” said Thibault afterwards. “Today, I had a plan, but I really wanted to give it everything, especially towards the final fence!”
Just outside the top three, Nayel Nassar finished fourth with the 14-year-old BWP gelding Little Magic d'Asschaut (by Back Gammon). Also jumping clear, Jur Vrieling completed the top five with the 10-year-old KWPN stallion Kannan JR (by Cornet Obolensky).
