This evening in Barcelona, the prestigious 1.50m Queen’s Cup was on the program. In this winning round, Belgium’s Gregory Wathelet, starting as the penultimate rider, jumped to an impressive victory. "My horse jumped fantastic today. Yesterday he was in form, today he confirmed," Wathelet says.
Wathelet, riding Double Jeu d’Honvault (Kannan), formerly ridden by Steve Guerdat, delivered a clear round in 45.91 seconds, securing the overall win.
"I'm super happy with this result," Wathelet says. "Double Jeu rode a perfect second round today. He felt great, allowing me to take the necessary risks to beat Sophie's time!"
Just before him, Sophie Hinners had taken over the lead from Giulia Martinengo Marquet. Hinners and the nine-year-old Zangersheide mare Iron Dames Kaleni Jo (Kannan, breeder: Stal Verhoeven) ultimately finished second. Riding Coynor (Canstakko, breeder: F. Conti), Italy’s Giulia Martinengo Marquet completed the podium in third place.
In front of his home crowd, Carlos Bosch Cebrián narrowly missed the top three. With his BWP gelding O’Balou van de Plataan Kar (Baloubet du Rouet), the Spaniard was the slowest of the clear rounds, finishing fourth.
Olympic champion Christian Kukuk, last to go, ended up fifth. For a moment, it looked as though Kukuk and Cepano Baloubet (Chaman) were on their way to victory, but a rail down at the final fence and a time of 46.48 seconds placed them fifth overall.
