American showjumper Lillie Keenan has announced the retirement from top-level sport of her iconic 16-year-old Selle Français gelding, Argan de Beliard. Known affectionally as "Mr. Consistency" within the U.S. equestrian team, the grey superstar officially hangs up his competitive boots healthy, happy, and at the absolute peak of his legacy.
Argan first joined Keenan’s string in 2022 as an 11-year-old, having previously been campaigned by Portugal’s Luis Sabino Gonçalves. It was U.S. teammate McLain Ward who originally persuaded Keenan to buy "that white horse from Luis," a moment that would redefine her international trajectory. Over the following four years, the gelding rapidly grew into one of the most dependable Nations Cup horses in American showjumping history, delivering double-clear performances with remarkable regularity. Their impressive track record includes anchoring the United States to a historic victory in the prestigious CSIO5* 1.60m Mercedes-Benz Nations Cup at CHIO Aachen in 2025, as well as securing a decisive win at the Longines League of Nations qualifier in Ocala.
Reflecting on their journey, Keenan shared that Argan expanded far beyond initial expectations to become a true superstar for the American team. Beyond the results and titles, she noted that what made her proudest was his unwavering heart and willingness to fight for her every single time he entered the arena, competing at the pinnacle of the sport far longer than anyone had anticipated.
Achieving such longevity at the top required a dedicated team, and Keenan paid tribute to everyone involved in Argan’s success. She expressed her gratitude to McLain Ward for his early vision, Luis Sabino Gonçalves for his trust, and veterinarians Heather Sherman, Emmanuelle Van Erck, and Frederik Bruyninx for their tireless care. Farriers Pierre Renault and Kenan Burgaud were credited with finding the precise shoeing formula for his comfort, while long-time groom Corentin Tual received special thanks for caring for Argan with equal devotion throughout his competitive career.
Argan now enters his well-deserved next chapter at Llangollen, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and sportsmanship. As Keenan concluded, giving such a generous partner the happy and healthy retirement he earned is the ultimate reward, marking the end of a remarkable era for American showjumping.
