On her social media, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum announced the passing of her trusted horse Checkmate (Contender). "I am saddened to share that my 'partner in crime' Checkmate, aka 'Joey,' has passed away at the age of 30. He was truly my once-in-a-lifetime horse with his unique style!"
According to the rider, he was not the typical horse. "But he loved to jump. Together, we achieved many successes."
The duo won two gold medals at World and European Championships and also became German champions twice! Additionally, they scored victories in several CSI5* Grand Prix events and World Cup competitions.
At the age of 19, Checkmate retired to pasture alongside his companion, Shutterfly.
