The Holsteiner Verband has announced that the well-known KWPN stallion Uriko has passed away at the age of 19. Due to an incurable orthopedic condition, the stallion had to be humanely euthanized. "Today is a difficult day for the entire team at the Holsteiner Verband stallion station," responded Managing Director Felix Flinzer. "After careful consideration, we had to make the decision to let Uriko go." The decision to euthanize the stallion was made in close consultation with the treating veterinarians.
Although Uriko was originally registered with the KWPN, he carried predominantly Holsteiner blood through his dam Wizzard (by Lavito - Corrado - Ronald - Fasolt). Wizzard represented the well-known Holsteiner damline (Stamm) 4172.
The Dutch breeding syndicate Aaldering - Welheim chose the KWPN stallion Untouchable as the sire for Wizzard at the time. Through Untouched, Untouchable is also the grandsire of United Touch S—the horse with which Richard Vogel recently won the Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen. Uriko played a vital role in anchoring this highly successful 'U-line' of Untouchable.
Successful Offspring
Uriko quickly made a name for himself as a sire in showjumping breeding. His most famous offspring is undoubtedly the licensed stallion Uricas v/d Kattevennen, who shone at the Olympic Games under Harrie Smolders. Other prominent flag-bearers for Uriko include Bull Run’s Jireh (ridden by Kristen Vanderveen, USA) and Charisma HS, who became champion at the Bundeschampionat under Richard Vogel and is now successful internationally.
In total, no fewer than 18 licensed sons carry on his legacy. In addition to Uricas, these include:
-
United Way: A Holsteiner Verband sire who jumped at 1.55m level with Lukas Wenz.
-
Unlimited: The champion stallion of the Holsteiner licensing in 2016.
-
Uno I: The reserve champion of the Holsteiner licensing in 2017.
Sporting Career
Uriko was not only active in breeding but also performed at a high level in the sport himself. Under the saddles of Thomas Konle, Maximilian Gräfe, and Ebba Johansson, he achieved success in advanced-level showjumping (S-level) up to 1.50 meters.
In 2019, an injury brought an early end to his sporting career, after which he focused entirely on breeding.
"With the loss of Uriko, the breeding world loses not only an excellent sire, but also a stallion who was simultaneously a beacon of hope, a figurehead, and a trailblazer. Uriko leaves behind a legacy that will last forever," expressed an emotional Holsteiner Verband.
