Brazilian showjumper Yuri Mansur has dropped a bombshell on his national federation. Although he was scheduled to compete at the World Championship in Aachen this week with his top stallion QH Alfons Santo Antonio, the 47-year-old rider has announced his immediate resignation from the Brazilian team. On social media, Mansur launched a scathing attack on the federation's leadership.
The abrupt decision follows prolonged and escalating tensions with the Brazilian team management. For Mansur, last Sunday was the final straw.
"After more than a decade since arriving in Europe and after a long period of my life dedicated to personal growth and to honoring and representing my country, I faced the worst episode of this journey today," a distressed Mansur wrote on his social media channels. "The events of this Sunday, August 16, crossed every line regarding ethics, respect, and sportsmanship."
Mansur, who has represented Brazil twice at both the Olympic Games and the World Equestrian Games, did not hold back in his criticism of the team's leadership and internal culture:
"Not that these years have been easy, far from it. I’ve had to contend with so much incompetence, a lack of capable leadership, power struggles among the athletes themselves, a total lack of commitment to what truly matters, and an absence of unity or a winning mentality. Every year, the process and the result are the same: fighting, insults, deliberate lack of communication, a lack of honest rules and procedures, favoritism, and no results..."
According to Mansur, while individual riders have achieved remarkable results over the years, the squad as a collective has always fallen short—stuck in an endless loop of being "almost there". The rider of the well-known Vitiki went on to allege serious misconduct:
"I received the most deplorable treatment from this management team—the worst I have ever witnessed. I was blackmailed and mistreated. Yet, I pressed on and gave my all for this country. But with great sadness, I am announcing this difficult decision: as of today, I will no longer represent Brazil in championships or Nations Cups."
Four Combinations Remaining for Aachen
Despite his fierce criticism of the officials, Mansur concluded his statement with a sportsmanlike message to his teammates: "To all the athletes heading to the World Championship to represent Brazil, I sincerely wish you the best of luck. I’ll be rooting for you! As for this management team, I feel nothing but pity."
Following Mansur's last-minute withdrawal, Chef d'Équipe Pedro Paulo Lacerda will travel to Aachen with four remaining combinations:
-
Stephan Barcha & Chevaux Primavera Império Egípcio
-
Luciana Diniz & Vertigo du Désert
-
Marlon Módolo Zanotelli & Dorette
-
Rodrigo Pessoa & Prins van 't Eigenlo
