Marcus Ehning: "Criticism on Social Media? ... You need to put it into perspective and consider who it’s coming from!"

Marcus Ehning is not only an icon within the industry but also far beyond it. His talent, years of experience, and humility make the German rider one of the role models in our sport. "In Germany, our sport is sometimes heavily criticized on social media. Even when I post something, there are occasionally unpleasant reactions. Sometimes I think, is this person just looking for attention in this way? Often, it's people who have little or no knowledge of horses themselves, which is unfortunate. But I don't lose sleep over it!"

"I’m in a fortunate position. I have incredibly good owners, which means I always have access to a stable full of excellent horses, but it wasn’t always like this," Ehning shares in an interview with Spring-Reiter! "When I get new horses to ride, I need to feel that we are on the same wavelength. I have to be able to imagine that I can ride clear rounds at the highest level with this horse... That’s when I know whether we’ll succeed as a combination or not."

"I don’t have a specific type of horse. Throughout my life, I’ve ridden many different horses. The ‘mindset’ is the most important thing! If the horse is mentally willing, you can go far... that’s how I define a good horse!"

Riders Must Find Their Own Path

"I was very successful as a young rider, and then, at a certain point, For Pleasure came into my life. That was a game-changer. Until that moment, it might have been my dream, but not my ambition, to ride in the Olympics or other major championships. Some riders need that ambition, while others don’t. Everyone must find their own path, but I think it helps if you don’t set your expectations too high."
