Coming together incredibly well with Jane Clark's Belgian-bred mare Cella as well as the Dutch-bred gelding Urico, Ben has won a total of four International classes in Wellington including the $100,000 Fidelity Grand Prix in Week 4 of the International competition. So needless to say, Ben has been rather busy leading up to the start of the 2013 Global Champions Tour season. Ben will start his GCT season in Madrid, a show he says is always nice and one he is looking forward to. The British Olympic gold medalist is also looking forward to Hamburg, Cannes, and London. It's clear that Ben will be a permanent fixture on the 2013 Global Champions Tour, as he shared with us that his main focus will be to attend as many GCT events as possible. "I'm planning to do as many as we can really. We'll start in Madrid with two horses and then I'll send another two different ones to Hamburg."
Ben is in a very exciting position this year with such a strong team of horses including his homebred stallion Tripple X, 2010 WEG attendee Urico and Cella. The 30 year old London-native, who is currently ranked 23rd in the world, has almost twice as many horses of international caliber then many of his world-ranked peers. Joining forces with Jane Forbes Clark (USA) has ensured that Ben will have a very competitive presence on the tour this season. "I will probably aim Tripple X and Urico a little more at the GCT season but I think Cella will start me off in Madrid on the Global Tour though, but we'll mix and match them a little bit. I'm quite lucky, I've got a few horses to switch up so."
Maher's favorite GCT event of the season is Cannes, France. "My favorite Global Tour for me, I love Cannes. Cannes is a nice show. But for sure Madrid to start off is going to be a great show, it’s always nice down there. Their all good." Looking back at the 2012 GCT season, Ben's favorite moment was Valencia, Spain where the British-born jockey and his Olympic mount Tripple X won the Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Spain. "Valencia was a good show for us" says Maher, who remarks that he intends on being very competitive within the league this year. There is no doubt that Ben and his strong team of horses will be a strong force within the tour this year so make sure to look out for the Olympic gold medalist as he sets to give rider's such as two-time season winner Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS) a run for their money.
