Showjumping stallion Contender (by Calypso II) has passed away yesterday. The 30-year-old Holsteiner was deteriorating rapidly because of his old age and the decision was made to put him to sleep on Monday evening. The Hannoverian Checkmate, a successful horse under the saddle of Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, is probably the best known son of Contender. For a long period Contender used to be the showpiece of the Holsteiner Verband. He delivered many (show)jumping horses. Like Collin (ds. Landgraf I), who won the prestigious Hamburger Derby three times (2004, 2005, 2006) with Toni Hassmann.
