Clipping of whiskers banned in international competition in 2021

The FEI will ban the shaving or trimming of 'whiskers' on horses from 2021. The new rule was approved at the online meeting on November 23 and is covered by the new veterinary rules.

From July next year, shaving the 'whiskers' on a horse's nose will be banned, unless for veterinary reasons. Horses that nevertheless enter an FEI event with shaved whiskers will be disqualified. However, if the whiskers have been removed by a veterinarian for veterinary reasons, it is allowed.

"Shaving a horse's whiskers leads to a loss of sensory ability and can therefore hinder a horse," said the FEI.
