Living legend Alexis Gruss passed away

Alexis Gruss was a prominent figure in the world of circus and equestrian arts, hailing from a long tradition of circus performers. He inherited his passion from his father, André Gruss, a renowned clown, and his great-grandfather, Charles-André Gruss, the first in the family to perform in a circus ring in 1854.

In 1974, Alexis Gruss founded Cirque à l’ancienne with his wife, a circus that advocated for a revolutionary approach to traditional circus acts, focusing on acrobatics and the art of horsemanship.

Gruss is celebrated for his contribution to revitalizing the circus world by emphasizing equestrian arts over classical animal training acts. He was recognized as a master horseman and inspired numerous generations with his dedication to and passion for horsemanship. In addition to his circus work, Gruss was a talented saxophonist.

His influence extended to the creation of a series of shows and productions, including "Les Folies Gruss," which brought together horses and performers in unique, innovative performances. Alexis Gruss was honored as a Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters and a Knight of the Legion of Honor for his contributions to culture and the equestrian arts.
