South Africa new host for 2022 FEI General Assembly

South Africa new host for 2022 FEI General Assembly

Cape Town, South Africa's oldest and second largest city, will host the next International Equestrian Federation (FEI) General Assembly from November 9-13, 2022 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The decision was made by the FEI Board of Directors during its monthly teleconference on March 22. This is the first time that the FEI's largest annual meeting will come to South Africa. The event has only been held on the African continent once before, in 2002 in Rabat, the capital of Morocco.

"We are delighted to be going to Africa for this year's general assembly," said Sabrina Ibáñez, FEI secretary general. "The South African Equestrian Federation generously invited us in 2020, but the event had to be cancelled twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Africa is a dynamic continent with enormous potential for the development of equestrian sports. Countries in the region have been involved in many FEI solidarity projects and gathering in South Africa will provide our community with a fantastic opportunity to learn more about their progress over the years. The hybrid format of online and in-person general assembly that we used last year in Antwerp allowed for broad participation, especially for those national federations that were unable to send a representative. It was a successful formula, which we will implement again this year. I know South Africa will be an excellent host and we look forward to seeing the global equestrian family in Cape Town in November."

"We are very excited to host the FEI General Assembly and to showcase the achievements of our country and our continent," says Professor Ian Sanne, President of the South African Equestrian Federation. "Having patiently waited for this opportunity, we are determined to provide the best possible backdrop for the important decisions that will be made. Cape Town is a vibrant city. We are already working hard and enthusiastically preparing for a week of hard work and an unforgettable African-style celebration."
