Frank Kemperman: "The right thing to do was cancelling"

Frank Kemperman, sport director of CHIO Aachen, has indicated that most sportevents that had to cancel their edition this year due to corona, will survive the crisis and will be able to go on as planned in 2021. He however does state this 'does not have to happen too often'.

"Our first reaction was 'we don't have to panic, this will just be like a normal flue' as so many people thought", Kemperman says. "We thought situations like the situation in Italy would never happen here. But then that changed. We saw people around us getting sick, the world around us was changing. And then you have to make a decision as an event. Two weeks ago we decided that CHIO Aachen could not take place on the planned date, but we however decided it way earlier".

Kemperman however says there is no reason to panic: "Our competition is cancelled for now, but we're a healthy company. I'm sure that we will survive this. We remain dependent from other peoples and companies such as sponsors but I presume that the biggest competitions in our sport will survive the crisis and will come back even stronger. For Aachen I hope that the competition can take place later this year, that's the best scenario".
