German rider Meredith Michaels Beerbaum has officially retired her former superstar Checkmate 4. The 20 year old gelding (Contender x Pik Blue) last competed in Geneva in December of last year, before spending the majority of this year resting in Wellington, Florida. With Meredith, the gelding helped to win team bronze at the 2009 European Championships in Windsor, as well as team gold at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky. The pair also won the FEI World Cup Final in Lyon at the beginning of 2010. The pair also had wins in Wellington, Estoril and Gothenburg, to name just a few. Checkmate, also affectionately known as Joey, will now enjoy his retirement at home with Meredith's other former superstar Shutterfly. Photo ©Equnews.fr
