The International Federation (FEI) has published the qualification system for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles on its website. This release follows approval during the General Assembly in Hong Kong in November and the IOC Executive Board meeting held last week.
The host nation receives 3 quota places, with 72 additional spots available, bringing the total to 75. The team qualification accounts for 60 places, representing 20 national teams. This implies that the team format will mirror that of Paris, featuring no drop score.
Team Qualification The host nation, the United States, automatically qualifies with a team. Next August, during the World Championships in Aachen, the seven highest-placed teams will also earn a ticket.
The European Championship in Waregem (2027) will allocate a spot to the three best teams from Olympic Groups A and/or B, provided they did not already qualify in Aachen the previous year. For Groups D and/or E, three spots will be up for grabs during the 2027 Pan-American Games in Lima.
Individual Qualification Nations that have not qualified a team are eligible for a maximum of one individual quota place per country. The distribution of these 15 tickets is as follows:
-
Via the Olympic Ranking (10 tickets): The two highest-ranked riders from Groups A, B, C, F, and G earn a quota place for their country.
-
Via the Pan-American Games (3 tickets): The top three individual riders from Groups D and/or E.
-
Via Olympic Ranking D/E (1 ticket): The best rider from the combined North and South American ranking.
-
Overall Ranking (1 ticket): The highest-ranked rider on the overall ranking who has not yet secured a ticket through the routes mentioned above.
