It has been a year for the history books for Nina Mallevaey. Looking back on the 2025 season, the French talent doesn’t hesitate to call it the best year of her career so far. But for Mallevaey, the highlight wasn’t just the ribbons or the prize money; it was the shared joy with those who helped her get there. "The moment I’m most proud of is my win in the Rolex Grand Prix at the Brussels Stephex Masters," Mallevaey reflects. "It meant so much to everyone who was there with me. I was surrounded by the Rein family, my father, close friends, and so many people who have helped me reach this point. I love making the people who have done so much for me proud; working hard and performing well is my way of saying thank you to them."
That gratitude extends deeply to the team behind the scenes. Mallevaey is quick to credit the Rein family, whose trust provides her with exceptional horses, and her trainer, Helena Stormanns. She also highlights the tireless work of her grooms, Quentin LeSaint and Clémence Rességuier, and her home rider Nora Krogsaeter. "In a sport where we lose far more than we win, being surrounded by people who give you confidence is essential," she notes.
From TV Screens to "Mystical" Venues
The road to 5* glory began simply with a love for the animal. Inspired by her father, who kept horses purely out of passion rather than for sport, Mallevaey’s childhood was spent in pony club and watching Equidia every Sunday.
"Watching the world’s best riders on incredible horses felt like a dream," she recalls, citing idols like Pénélope Leprévost, Kevin Staut, and Beezie Madden. Today, she is the one inspiring the next generation, competing at the very venues she once watched on television.
Competing at the Rolex Grand Slam Majors this year—specifically Aachen and Spruce Meadows—was a surreal experience for the young rider. "They’re truly the dream in our sport – almost mystical," she says. "When you pass through the in-gate and into the ring, you’re surrounded by thousands of people, and a clear round feels electric as the crowd lifts with you. I can feel my horses growing to the occasion under me."
The Mares Making it Possible
Central to Mallevaey’s success is a trio of powerful mares: Dynastie de Beaufour, Nikka VD Bisschop, and My Clementine. While they all share a competitive spirit, Mallevaey describes them as having distinct personalities.
Dynastie is the showman of the group. "She lights up at Rolex shows like La Baule or Aachen," Mallevaey explains. "She seems to understand everything you ask of her... The only time she doesn’t want me near her is when she’s eating – that’s her moment alone!"
In contrast, Nikka provides a sense of security. "She is unbelievably brave and scopey, and nothing seems to faze her." Meanwhile, Clementine is the "fighter" of the string. Though smaller and more sensitive than the others, Mallevaey notes: "The moment she’s in the ring she becomes fearless."
Looking Ahead
With a breakout season behind her, Mallevaey is looking toward the future with ambition, yet she remains grounded. Her long-term sights are set on the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final and a return to her favorite show, CHIO Aachen.
However, her ultimate philosophy remains simple. "I want to keep improving and develop my horses as well as I can," she concludes. "But above all, I just want my horses to stay healthy and happy."
