For the next Olympic Games, to be held in Tokyo in 2020, the FEI has decided on who'll be the course builder for the courses. In Tokyo Spanish coursebuilder, Santiago Varela will design the classes. Varela was born in 1968 in Madrid, Spain and started his career as a coursebuilder in 1984 at the Club de Campo Madrid. In 1993 he promoted to an international coursebuilder. About two decennia later, in 2013, Varela was promoted as an FEI Titel Level 4 course designer. That year he designed the first Furusiyya Nations Cup Finals in Barcelona and the FEI European Championships for Young Riders, Juniors and Children in Vejer de la Frontera.
