The WBFSH recently published an update to its annual report, stating that foal prices at auction average €10,500 (excluding extremes). The organisation immediately puts this into context by noting that of the more than 102,000 registered foals in 2024, just under 1,500 were sold through auctions. The reality? The economic model underpinning the passion-driven foundation of our industry — breeding — is under pressure! That is why a first proposal for a global Breeder Bonus has been drawn up, which you can now consult for FREE on the website breederbonus.com...
"We must not be blinded by the prize money circulating in our sport. Ultimately, every prize comes with a certain investment." says Bram van Hulle in the EQUTALK podcast. "But breeders do deserve a little more recognition. The foundation of our industry must remain motivated so that we can ensure continuity over the next, say, 10 years..."
The FEI and WBFSH have been making great strides in recognising breeders for several years now. For instance, the FEI previously introduced a rule that name changes come with a fee attached. In official results processing, the breeder is also being credited more and more frequently. These are all signals of recognition!
Local initiatives such as the Belgian Breeder Bonus, the premium from the Friends of the KWPN, and the cheques that the Zangersheide studbook presents annually at the WBFSH World Championship for Young Horses are all expressions of appreciation for the (often) uncompensated passion that breeders demonstrate every day.
Economic model in a rut
Although the sector is evolving at a rapid pace, the economic model for the backbone of our sport — the breeder — has become unworkable. That is what we aim to change with the global breeder bonus. The great paradox? Riders and organisers are also under pressure, and if we want political feasibility, we need to devise a system that places virtually no burden on the governing bodies.
The first elaboration is now on paper for show jumping.
