Roberto Teran Tafur (COL) and his own Dez’Ooktoff took home the blue in Thursday’s $37,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 2* at Tryon International Equestrian Center & Resort (TIEC). Eliza Kimball (USA) picked up second place aboard her own Eclips, a 2009 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Baloubet de Rouet x Highline). Rounding out the podium was Filip de Wandel (BEL) and Manhattan Van’t Leeuwerikenhof, the 2012 Belgian Warmblood gelding (Emerald van’t Ruytershof x Kashmir van Schuttershof) owned by Five Way Farm LLC.
Fifty-eight entries challenged the first round of the class, with courses set by Guilherme Jorge (BRA). Nine entries representing five countries qualified for the jump off, and Teran Tafur was the only rider to bring forward two mounts for the short course test. With Santana, the 2013 Holsteiner gelding (Cascadello I x Carthago) owned by Rocking Basilisk Farm LLC, Teran Tafur grabbed a seventh place finish with a speedy time of 36.86, knocking one rail for a score of four faults.
Dez’Ooktoff, a 2008 Dutch Warmblood stallion (Colandro x Lys Rouge), found the CSI 2* competition to be easy, given that he has already competed as an Olympic mount for Teran Tafur. “He’s my main horse; I went to the Olympics last year with him to Tokyo. We are just getting ready to go to [the World Equestrian Games] (WEG) in August,” said Teran Tafur about his winning mount. “We were going to do a few big shows in Europe, but we didn’t have the chance to go. We went to Rome a month ago, and this is our last stop just to get him going and keep him in shape before we go to WEG!”
