Pablo Barrios and Le Vio are Three for Three After Win in $36,000 Sunday Classic CSI 3* at TIEC

Mill Spring, NC – July 8, 2019 – Pablo Barrios (VEN) and Le Vio sped to win the $36,000 Sunday Classic CSI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), stopping the jump-off timers at 28.837 seconds with no faults to claim their third FEI win of the week. Steve Schaefer (USA) and Valinski S, a 2002 Dutch Sport Horse gelding (Nijinski x Julius) owned by Wyndmont Inc, took second place on a clear jump-off performance of 29.603 seconds, while Sharn Wordley (NZL) and his own Gatsby, a 2004 Irish Sport Horse stallion (Simba x Cruise On), claimed third-place honors with another clear round and a time of 30.602 seconds.

Barrios and the 2009 Hanoverian gelding (Van Gogh x Drosselklang II) owned by Gut Einhaus LLC, were one of 11 pairs to be tested in the jump-off track, designed by Alan Wade (IRL). Barrios went in with a plan to gain the advantage: “I think I found a super nice [jump to] number one that allowed me to do eight strides. The [distance from] one to two was pretty far and I couldn’t bend it. I turned really quick to the combination, [jump] seven to eight, and I was able to do six strides to the final jump and I think that was the key,” Barrios revealed.

He continued: “Alan has done a great job; he’s a great course designer, and I love when we come here. He really tests the horses and he knows the feel of the riders and horses. It has been a very nice week, all the courses have been good and very fun to ride!”

Barrios and Le Vio have been together for almost a year, competing in major Grand Prix competitions and even winning the gold medal for Individual Jumping at the 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games Barranquilla 2018. “He has been a very good horse so far. Every time he’s showing a little more scope [over the jumps]. This week I put it down a little bit and just decided to jump the speed classes and the lower classes. He’s very quick and he covers the ground - I mean, he’s a super careful horse.”

Barrios’ win to wrap up Tryon Summer 4 at TIEC came following a very successful week aboard Le Vio: “[Le Vio] was perfect this week. He won three classes this week out of the three that he jumped, so that’s very impressive. He is a winner, but I never expected to win three classes in the same week!”

Jumper Highlights:

In the Developing Jumper Series 6 Yr Old Young Jumper 1.30m Division, David O’Brien (Lexington, KY) piloted the Spy Coast Farm entry, Nanette SCF,to champion honors for the week. Reserve champion honors were awarded to Northern Exposure, owned by Melissa Wight and ridden by Mark Bluman (Lexington, KY).

The Developing Jumper Series 7 Yr Old Young Jumper 1.30-1.35m Division congratulated Megan McDermott (South Salem, NY) and the Counter Balance LLC entry, Biscotti, on earning champion honors in the division. Aaron Vale (Williston, FL) rode the Thinks Like A Horse entry, Prescott, to reserve champion honors for the week.

Todd Minikus (Loxahatchee, FL) showed his own Juju VDM in the Nutrena® 1.40m Open Jumper Division to earn champion for the week. A tie for reserve champion honors was awarded to Virginia Bonnie (San Francisco, CA) aboard Kimberly Prince’s Corneel and also to Taylor Kain (Lexington, KY) on the Eirecon Equine Sales-owned Gipsy 1134.

Samuel Parot (Wellington, FL) rode his own I&H Boogy Woogy to earn champion in the CaptiveOne Advisors 1.20m Open Jumper Division. Aaron Vale (Williston, FL) piloted Inzell B, owned by Halcyon Hill LLC, to reserve champion honors.

The 1.10m Jumper Division saw Meredith Gallagher (Haines City, FL) and the Cali Horse Sales LLC-owned, City Walk, take champion of the division. Avery Moore (Atlanta, GA) and her own Papaver LS earned reserve champion in the division.

Gustavo Prato (Wellington, FL) rode Santiago Lambre’s Gloria to champion honors in the 1.35m Open Jumper Division. Reserve champion honors were split between Steve Schaefer (Maple Park, IL) and Wyndmont Inc’s Favoriet U as well as Geoffery Hesslink (Shelburne, VT) aboard the Double H Farm entry, HH Casey Jones.

Hunter Highlights:

Julie Curtin (Woodstock, GA) dominated the High Performance Hunter 4’ Division, earning champion honors aboard Christina Fisher’s Levland as well as reserve champion honors aboard Rebekah Warren’s Cassico.

The Pulse Equine Performance Hunter 3’3” Division saw Megan Wexler (Ocala, FL) show Catherine Merrill’s entry, Amara, to earn champion for the week. Reserve champion honors were awarded to Thomas Serio (Aberdeen, NC) and Lady Stella, owned by Abigail Brittenham.

The Walk-Trot-Canter A Division congratulated Frances Gray (Davidson, NC) and Jessica West’s Millpond China Doll on earning champion in the division. Eden Wolfe (Charleston, SC) showed Pepperwood Enchanted, owned by Stehle Wolfe, to earn the reserve champion honors.

Mary McKenzie (Wellington, FL) rode the Quail Run Partnerships-owned Castle Keep to champion in the Green Hunter 3’3” Division, while Kelley Farmer (Wellington, FL) rode Valerie Kalderon’s entry, Etiquette, to reserve champion honors.

In the Green Hunter 3’9” Division, Lindsay Maxwell (Beverly Hills, CA) rode her own entry, High Society, to champion honors. Tommi Clark (Tryon, NC) rode the Stephen Borders-owned Appointed to reserve champion honors.

Kara Jones (Cornelius, NC) showed her own entry Chello in the Foothills Hunter 3’ Division to earn champion for the week. Donald Sheehan (Maryville, TN) and Caroline Mirts (Knoxville, TN) rode her own Bora Bora to earn reserve champion in the division.
