On Friday, the apotheosis at CSIO Roma Piazza di Siena was the CSIO5* Nations Cup! Before the action between the nations started, two regular classes were finished. Despite being represented by only two riders, France is holding its own against the large Italian contingent at the 91st CSIO of Rome – Master d’Inzeo. After Emeric George’s victory in yesterday’s opening event at the Galoppatoio, today Kevin Staut took home the biggest win aboard of Beau de Laubry Z (Bisquet Balou C). Emanuele Gaudiano secured another Italian victory.
The CSIO5* Longines Ranking class presented by Aston Martin came into the hands of France's Kevin Staut. With the 11 years old gelding by Bisquet Balou C, Staut cleared the 1.55m high jumps flawlessly, the only one (out of seventeen) to do so in under a minute (59.68). With a difference of over three seconds, victory was theirs. Daniel Deusser (GER) and the Number One d'Iso stallion, Bingo Ste Hermelle followed in second place. Alberto Zorzi represented the hosting country and steered Cortez van't Klein Asdonk Z (Cornet Obolensky) into third.
For Staut, this marks his fourth victory at the Rome CSIO: "It’s strange to be here without the team and not participating in the Nations Cup as in the past. Let’s say that today I was able to compete more relaxed, with less pressure. In any case, the level of participants is always high, really challenging, so I am particularly pleased with this victory with Beau de Laubry Z. He’s a horse that remained on the shortlist for the Paris Olympics. Before Rome, he performed excellently in other important events, and I really like his characteristics, but I still need to evaluate if he can be the right partner for the Olympic challenge."
France was also represented on fourth place with Emeric George and Calisco de Terlong (Mylord Carthago). The top five was completed by Shane Sweetnam (IRL) on Irandole du Flot (Vivaldi du Seigneur).
An interesting fact: Mexican rider Eugenio Garza Perez, with Chalouries Ps, had at one point taken the lead from Deusser but was unfortunately eliminated by the Jury for failing to jump obstacle 9.

Gaudiano succeeded with Jaja, a 10-year-old grey gelding. No mistakes on the ten jumps, like eleven other competitors, and most notably, the usual fantastic time, thanks to a very fast course completed in 46.91, with a 1.53-second advantage over Britain’s Joseph Stockdale, who competed with Equine Rescue Services Kandleford (Kannan).
"Jaja is a horse that has already won several timed events; today, he confirmed to be very fast on courses like this. I don’t know if he can become a grand prix horse, but he’s reliable and useful, and I count on him a lot for the future," commented Gaudiano on his third victory in four events at this edition of the Rome CSIO, after those won yesterday with Emilio Bicocchi and Lorenzo De Luca.
The podium was completed by Belgium’s Zoe Conter with Lazy (Hickstead). (48.51). Among the Italians, an excellent performance was also noted from Massimo Grossato, who finished fourth with Legend (Cascadello) (50.22) followed by Abdullah Humaid Al Muhairi (UAE) with Coenig (Cordobes I) in fifth.
