The Chinese Year of the Horse is now reflected in the watch industry. Manufacturers have grabbed the opportunity to produce equine-inspired watches. Jaquet Droz introduces three new models. According to the brand they have been created using the exclusive know-how of Jaquet Droz's master craftsmen, specialized in highly complex engraving, painting and Grand Feu enamel. The dial of the Petite Heure Minute 41mm has been chosen as the showcase to depict a horse against a backdrop engraved and patinated by hand of a mother-of-pearl dial. Only 88 of each model will be manufactured.
Also Piaget designed a new watch for the year of the Horse. It features a design created by enameling artist Anita Porchet. The 38mm watch uses gold wire outlining, which is fixed with adragante gum to create the pattern. The design is outlined by 78 brilliant-cut diamonds. This limited edition watch is available in both white and pink gold.
Swiss Vacheron Constantin is also offering Year of the Horse special-edition watches. The horse-themed collection is made up of two models, crafted in pink gold or platinum. The watches have a leaf motif, stemming from classic Chinese iconography, with raised bamboo stalks that appear to be floating over the dial. The horse is positioned in the middle of the dial. In all, four windows show the hour, the minutes, the day and the date respectively.
Chopard offeres a horse-themed watch in its prized Urushi series. The watch is 39.5mm wide and 6.8mm thick, with a black alligator leather strap. Chopard is representing it in a blak and Maki-e Gold box featuring an auspicious octogonal shape. The watch will be expected to sell for around $25,000
Last but not least both Swatch and Ulysse Nardin came up with an original design for their horse-inspired watches. Ulysse Nardin offers a 18-carat gold watch featuring the self-winding UN-815 movement. The watch used the champlevé method to create an image of two horses on the dial of its Classico Horse timepiece.
Swatch on the other hand has come with a striking offering. The design of the watch recalls traditional Chinese drawings and calligraphy, with dynamic impressions of horses in motion. The case is solid matte white plastic with black and gray prints. The dial is white with black and red prints and red hands.
