British Federation Aims to Limit Whip Use in Show Jumping! "Full Focus on Horse Welfare..."

The British Federation has updated its regulations in line with the global debate on horse welfare. Starting January 2025, whips will no longer be allowed to "punish" horses. According to the federation, it is their duty to ensure that riders always prioritize horse welfare.

"A whip may be used a maximum of three times during a course and under no circumstances immediately after a refusal by the horse," states the amendment to the regulations. "The rider may not raise their arm above shoulder height, and the whip may only be used at the rider’s leg."

If the whip is used to support the horse's shoulder, the rider must keep both hands on the reins. If the horse's skin is injured or masked as a result of whip use, this is "always considered excessive."

Any misuse of a whip will always have disciplinary consequences.
