The world’s top show jumping athletes entered the International Ring for the first time today as international competition officially got underway at the 2026 Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’.
Opening day provides athletes competing in the CSIO5* division with their first opportunity to tackle the International Ring and begin their pursuit of Sunday’s feature competitions. With qualification opportunities on the line throughout the week, athletes are looking to put themselves in the best possible position early in the tournament.
With many of the world’s top athletes taking to the International Ring, FEI course designer Leopoldo Palacios (VEN) had his work cut out for him. Twenty-one horse-and-rider combinations produced clear rounds in the first round of the Cardel Homes Cup 1.55m, showcasing the depth and calibre of the field assembled for this year’s ‘Masters’.
A Spruce Meadows veteran, Daniel Coyle (IRL) knew exactly what it would take to get the job done. Aboard the relatively new partnership of Calippo 57 (Casallco x For Edition, breeder: Jurgen Helmlce), Coyle delivered a fast and faultless performance, crossing the finish line in 40.24 seconds to claim the win.

Daniel Deusser and Pepita van 't Meulenhof BR (El Torreo de Muze) followed as runner-up, leaving McLain Ward with High Star Hero (Zazu x Darco) in third.
Richard Vogel takes opening win!
The TELUS Cup 1.50m opened international competition in the International Ring today, with 62 horse-and-rider combinations taking on a track designed by FEI course designer Leopoldo Palacios (VEN). The one-round competition rewarded both speed and precision, with the fastest clear round taking the victory.
The track covered 490 metres and featured 11 obstacles with 13 jumping efforts, all of which had to be completed within the 74-second time allowed. Today, World No. 1 Richard Vogel (GER) proved exactly why he holds the top spot in the rankings. Aboard Chember 3 (Charleston x Quebec 19, breeder: Lutz Dechau), Vogel delivered a blisteringly fast clear round, crossing the finish line in just 62.83 seconds—nearly two seconds faster than second-place finisher Martin Fuchs (SUI) aboard Falcon de Toultia Z (For Pleasure x HH Chopin van de Broy).
