In Vejer de la Frontera, the 1.50m Grand Prix qualification was ridden directly against the clock. After a flawless round in 64.17 seconds, Enrique Gonzalez (MEX) and the 11-year-old BWP gelding, Origi van de Zeshoek (breeder: Paul & Bastiaan Merckx), raced to victory.
Gonzalez and Tim van den Broeck's former son of Marius Claudius narrowly edged out Graham Gillespie, who was riding the 17-year-old Veneno (Chacco-Blue). In the saddle of Paul Schockemöhle's bred gelding, the British rider Emeric George with Dune du Ru (Vagabond de la Pomme) finished ahead.
Just outside the top three, Matthew Sampson followed on the 13-year-old BWP gelding, Medoc de Toxandria (Der Senaat). The top five was completed by Rodrigo Giesteira Almeida and the 12-year-old U2 Westleven Z (Uto Kervec).
