The two-round competition saw eight nations face off, but as the evening progressed, it transformed into a high-stakes duel between the USA and Ireland.

In the opening round, the Americans asserted their dominance early. Spectacular clear rounds from Karl Cook (Caracole de la Roque, f. Zandor Z), Marilyn Little (La Contessa, f. Land cruiser ), and Callie Schott (Garant, f. Warrant) allowed the U.S. to finish the first phase on a zero-fault score—meaning anchor rider McLain Ward didn't even have to swing into the saddle.

Ireland, however, was hot on their heels. With clear efforts from Cian O’Connor (Ulysses), Tom Wachman (Do It Easy), and Shane Sweetnam (Rural Juror SCF), they matched the American score, setting the stage for a dramatic second-round showdown.

Clutch Performance from McLain Ward

As the second round unfolded, the pressure mounted. Both Cook and Ireland's Jordan Coyle picked up four faults, leaving the gold medal to be decided by the final riders.

The equation was simple: if Sweetnam and Ward both went clear, the crowd would witness a jump-off. But when the final rail fell for Sweetnam and Rural Juror SCF, the door swung open for the Americans.

Six-time Olympian McLain Ward entered the ring on the 12-year-old Dutch-bred gelding Jordan Molga M (Etoulon VDL x Dulf van den bisschop), knowing a clear round would seal the win. Despite the immense pressure and the horse being a relatively new partner—purchased only three months ago with sponsor Mike Smith—Ward delivered a masterclass. The pair went clear to the roar of a packed stadium, clinching the title on a final team score of zero. "We're really excited about this horse," Ward said following the victory. "He has a lot of quality. I think he’s a spectacular jumper and we believe he’s a championship horse."

Final Standings

While Ireland settled for second place on four faults, the battle for the remaining spots was fierce. Canada rounded out the podium in third, while Australia staged a strong second-round comeback to leapfrog Mexico for fourth.
