After months of absence, Swiss show jumper Janika Sprunger has finally provided clarity regarding the situation of her top mare, Orelie. The mare, who hasn’t appeared in the ring since September of last year, is struggling with unexpected medical complications.
Orelie was last seen in action during the Longines Nations League in Saint-Tropez. Since then, there has been silence surrounding the mare, leading to widespread speculation about potential injuries. Sprunger is now setting the record straight: "Orelie is not injured, but has developed neurological problems as a side effect of a CT scan."
Heartbreak, Recovery, and Awareness
The rider is not hiding her emotions, admitting that the situation "broke her heart." However, she also shared hopeful news: over the past six months, there has been a clear and steady improvement in the mare's health.
Behind the scenes, the team is working tirelessly on a comeback. In addition to the update on Orelie, Sprunger wants to send a vital message to other horse owners, warning them about the risks of medical procedures that are often presented as 'standard.'
"Do not have high-risk examinations performed unless it is truly necessary," she emphasizes. "At the time, I was not aware of the potential risks; it was presented as a simple, twenty-minute procedure."
While the road to full recovery is still ongoing, the goal remains unchanged: getting Orelie back into the competition ring as soon as she is physically and mentally ready.
