The Basel World Cup reshuffled the cards... Eight combinations qualified for the jump-off in this 1.60m round, seven duos actually started. Ultimately, there was no stopping the French speed duo, Julien Epaillard and his 12-year-old Donatello d'Auge (breeder: Susana Epaillard).
Epaillard and the 12-year-old son of Jarnac finished just under two seconds faster than Maikel van der Vleuten. The Dutch show jumper followed with his 15-year-old Beauville Z N.O.P. (breeder: Pascal Habets) in second place. Riding the son of Bustique, Van der Vleuten himself stayed more than three seconds ahead of British rider Tim Gredley.
Gredley completed the top three with the 12-year-old KWPN gelding, Imperial HBF(breeder: L.J. Tinto). Only this top three managed to ride a double clear round.
With one jumping fault, Martin Fuchs, competing in front of his home crowd, narrowly missed the podium. Fuchs, riding Commissar Pezi (Commissario), finished ahead of Olympic team champion Ben Maher and the 11-year-old Point Break (Action-Breaker).
