On Wednesday, the CSI5* program at Santa Anita Park in Los Angeles kicked off with a 1.45m Longines Ranking class. In this C. Jarvis Insurance class, Mathijs van Asten jumped to victory with Orlando van de Afspanning (Kartouzo van ’t Kathof), the former BWP gelding of Yana Jansegers.
In the 1.45m two-phase class, Mathijs van Asten secured the win in 25.70 seconds with the 11-year-old BWP gelding, bred by Véronique Vanbrabant. The pair finished just under two seconds ahead of Nicole Walker, who took second place with Atout des Trambles (Nectar des Forets*Hn), stopping the clock at 27.26 seconds. Laura Kraut completed the podium in third place.
The American rider secured her top-three finish aboard the nine-year-old KWPN mare Lady D (Eldorado vd Zeshoek).
They were followed by Karl Cook, who, riding his SF mare Caracole de la Roque (Zandor), finished one hundredth of a second ahead of Michael Duffy and the 10-year-old stallion Chili Pepper H&M Z (Cornet Obolensky).
